New Academic Member at EBI: The Faculty of Economics & Business Zagreb

The EBI – European Banking Institute is pleased to announce that the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Economics & Business, has joined the EBI as an Academic Member

As Croatia’s largest and oldest university, the University of Zagreb brings extensive expertise in financial law and banking regulation, further enhancing EBI’s mission of fostering high-quality cross-border research on European banking and financial supervision.

“This partnership will foster new academic insights and enhance collaboration across different legal and economic traditions, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of banking regulation.”

~ Dr. Thomas Gstädtner ~
President of the Supervisory Board of EBI

New members of the Young Researchers Group

The Young Researchers Group at the European Banking Institute has recently expanded, welcoming 15 new members. Additionally, leadership of the group has transitioned; former co-coordinator Joeri De Smet has completed his PhD and now holds a position as Assistant Professor in European Law at Maastricht University. The group is now jointly led by Thomaz Braga de ArrudaMilena Mitrovic (both University of Luxembourg), and Fabian Schinerl (University of Vienna).

The group serves as a platform where young scholars conduct interdisciplinary research and discuss current legal challenges in the broader realm of European banking and financial markets law. They hold monthly virtual workshops, allowing members to present their ongoing research, and receive constructive feedback from peers and a senior EBI member who chairs each session, and actively engage in academic projects developed within the EBI network.

Recently, the YRG was granted the privilege of holding a panel at the EBI International Colloquium in memory of Luis Silva Morai hosted by the Real Collegio de España and the University of Bologna. The panel featured eleven presentations covering a wide range of topics and expertise, including bank governance, derivatives regulation, AI, money laundering, deposit insurance, and the enforcement of both public and private law, being chaired by the YRG’s Academic Coordinator, Prof. Filippo Annunziata, and including the participation of invited professors from European universities as discussants.

International Colloquium
– in Memoriam of Luis Silva Morais –
“Capital Markets and Banking Unions, Law and the Courts”

On 13-14 February 2025, at the initiative of the Academic Board of the EBI, an International Colloquium was held on: “Capital Markets and Banking Unions: Law and the Courts – Challenges and Perspective”.

This Colloquium, kindly hosted by the University of Bologna and the Real Colegio de España Bologna, was organised in memory of our dearest Luís Silva Morais, who passed away in September 2024, deeply saddening his family and his many friends, including those of the EBI community.

Luis was a distinguished academic scholar and lawyer and an active member in various EU bodies, including the Appeal Panel of the Single Resolution Board. His contribution to the work of the Academic Board of the EBI has been invaluable.

Marco Lamandini (University of Bologna and EBI) has managed to gather a unique team of experts in the fields where Luis has excelled – including members of the EBI Young Researchers Group, which Luis had greatly supported. In organising this conference, he and his team at the University of Bologna have made this event a success.

The EBI wishes to thank again cordially all those who contributed to this important event dedicated to a great person.

On February 25, the EBI Policy Center hosted its 25th EBI Policy Series on “Climate-related litigation risk”. This event was moderated by Nejc Smole, EBI.

We would like to thank Ferdisha Snagg (Cleary Gottlieb), Marguerite O’Connell (European Central Bank), and David Ramos Muñoz (JUniversidad Carlos Ill de Madrid and EBI) for the lively discussion.
