2nd EBI Sustainable Finance Series – the “central banking perspective”

July 9, 2021

The 21st century confronts humanity with the threats of climate change and loss of biodiversity. EU regulation and governance of finance and banking needs to be at the forefront of its response. Since the European Commission launched its Action Plan on Sustainable Finance in 2018, policy initiatives have multiplied promoting transparency and certainty („Green Taxonomy”), asking firms and banks to take an honest look at the climate and environmental risks (EBA initiatives and ECB Guidelines). At the same time, central banks are even considering how these new objectives should shape their monetary policy. Yet, these efforts also raise difficult questions. Are the new regulations fit for purpose? What are the new challenges for supervisors and monetary authorities? The new EBI Sustainable Finance webinar series organised jointly by the Working Group on Finance, Climate Change and Sustainability and EBI’s Associate Researchers Group will bring together academics and practitioners to discuss these questions, and find answers.
