About:

Leiden University was founded in 1575 and is one of Europe’s leading international research universities. It has seven faculties in the arts, sciences and social sciences, spread over locations in Leiden and The Hague. The University has over 5,500 staff members and 25,800 students. The University motto is ‘Praesidium Libertatis’ – Bastion of Freedom.
Leiden Law School is one of the largest faculties at Leiden University.
The faculty’s research and teaching covers the full breadth of law and goes far beyond the national boundaries. With its international focus and roots going far back in the Dutch legal order, the faculty has helped to train many generations of legal professionals for key positions within society. The research of the faculty aims at excellent cutting-edge research across the full breadth of law.

Leiden Law School is proud of its position in international rankings, such as the Times Higher Education World University Ranking and QS World University Rankings. We rank number 24 in the QS World University Ranking by subject (and number 1 in the Netherlands).

Each year over 900 students opt to study law, notarial law, tax law or criminology in Leiden. The total number of Bachelor and Master students is approximately 5200. Additionally, each year around 500 to 600 foreign students come to Leiden, exchange students studying for one semester in Leiden as well as students selected for one of our nine Advanced master programmes.

Naturally, a main focus of the faculty is the Dutch legal system. The faculty continues to gear its study programmes towards current developments. In recent years new master programmes have been launched in the areas of financial law, labour law and – unique in the Netherlands – children’s law. A great deal of the faculty research is also directly relevant to professional practice. In this way, Leiden gives substance to its social responsibility.
