The University of Vienna’s law faculty is the oldest and largest law school in the German-speaking world. Law has been researched and taught there for over six centuries. Today, more than 10,000 students are supervised by about 600 employees.

The Institute for European, International and Comparative Law is responsible for the internationally oriented subjects European Law, International Law, Comparative Law, Private International Law, Uniform Law, International Relations and is divided into three departments (Department of European Law, Department of International Law and International Relations and Department of Comparative Law, Private International Law and Uniform Law).

The Institute’s academic focus is on European commercial and private law, the law of state responsibility, international investment law, international human rights, international family and contract law, and comparative private law.

Members of the Institute are represented in numerous domestic and foreign expert groups and contribute as publishers, authors and editors to the leading relevant Austrian and international journals, commentaries and textbooks.

In addition to the teaching and examination activities in the compulsory program of the diploma and doctoral studies, in-depth specialized training is offered in the optional subject baskets European Law, International Law and International Private Business Law and Comparative Law.  Members of the Institute coordinate ERASMUS programs with a total of 88 partner universities and supervise 180 incoming and outgoing students per year.

The Institute and its departments have produced internationally renowned legal scholars, such as Albert Ehrenzweig, Fritz Schwind, Alfred Verdross and Ignaz Seidl-Hohenveldern.
