With its 26,000 enrolled students, the University of Zurich (UZH) is Switzerland’s largest university. Founded in the year 1833, UZH was Europe’s first university to be established by a democratic political system; today, UZH is one of the foremost universities in the German-speaking world. Made up of seven faculties covering some 100 different subject areas, the University offers a wide variety of Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD programs. In addition, UZH’s continuing education programs offer excellent learning opportunities.

The UZH ranks amongst Europe’s most prestigious research institutions with numerous distinctions across various fields, highlighting the institution’s international renown. To date, the Nobel Prize has been conferred upon twelve UZH scholars.

The University Research Priority Program (URPP) Financial Market Regulation of the University of Zurich started on 1 January 2013. The political debate about stricter regulation of the financial sector in the aftermath of the Global Financial Crisis had a strong impact on Switzerland in general and Zurich in particular, due to its role as a leading financial center.

The URPP is a multi-disciplinary program, bringing together leading researchers from the University of Zurich’s Faculty of Law and Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics. Through this close co-operation, the URPP is in a unique position to examine both existing and newly proposed regulatory concepts from a variety of perspectives. Furthermore, these concepts are analyzed not only on a purely national level, but also in view of international developments and the global regulatory agenda.
